Trump Tariffs Shake Up Breville Production – How to beat price hikes ahead of Black Friday

In January, it can be a little more difficult to prepare your morning drink at home.

One of the main issues of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign was taking a more belligerent approach to trade and raising tariffs on imports from China. The consequences of this policy may affect your prices for household goods such as Breville espresso machines.

Now that Trump has been elected, companies with manufacturing plants in China are feeling pressure to change course. Breville is one of them, an appliance company that sells high-end espresso machines, drying ovens and juicers worldwide. Most of Breville’s products are manufactured in Shenzhen, a commercial metropolis in Southeast China.

“Now that [Donald] Trump has won the US presidential election, the near-term risk of material tariff increases on consumer goods coming out of China has strengthened,” Breville Chief Executive Jim Clayton said at a shareholder meeting on Thursday.

The company’s long-term relationship with Chinese manufacturers has helped keep costs more competitive, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. However, Trump’s new threat of tariffs could create supply chain battles that raise prices. Breville catalog currently ranges from $178 to $2,340.

The kitchen brand has already expressed plans to shift more production from China to defend against Trump’s tariff plan – which could mean a 10% or 20% tariff on at least 60% of Chinese goods. However, Clayton acknowledged that the move could have some consequences for consumers.

“We see some risks that a shift of production outside of China could result in impacts to either or both GM or product quality,” he explained.

Breville shares fell about 3% early Thursday morning, the first time markets opened after Wednesday’s election results.

With the holidays and major retail events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, more shoppers will be looking to score early deals on home essentials and gifts – especially before the transition of power shakes up the markets in January.

Clayton has suggested that consumers should expect business as usual until the tariffs are in place, “We will continue to build our inventory in the US, unabated, likely until the increased tariffs are implemented.”

Some of Breville’s best-selling products are currently listed on Amazon, attracting shoppers who may be looking to stock up before Trump’s tariffs take effect.

While there’s little to brag about, customers have noted that Breville’s popular Express Impress is a worthwhile investment for coffee lovers and one of the best gifts ahead of the holiday season.

The quality stainless steel barista machine features precise temperature controls, an intelligent dosing system that automatically calculates the perfect dose, and a pressing feature that replicates the “barista twist” for smooth, great-tasting coffee made on demand.

“The Breville machine is (when on sale) twice the cost of a Nespresso. But spread that out over five years and it’s not much of a factor,” said one customer. “Espresso shots taste so great.”

Not to mention, it’s currently $100 off ahead of Black Friday — making it a great time to grab it, considering the brand may see some supply chain issues over the next few months.
