It has a fascinating grip on Gen Z’s throat – and it’s not letting up.
The tie ie.
Yes, the formal couture style once worn exclusively by businessmen and tough-guy dads at funerals is rising again as the go-to outfit for A-list luminaries and Big Apple tastemakers.
“Tie = not just boy fun,” NYC content creator Natalie captioned a clip on social media, crediting Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” for influencing her outfit. “Suddenly, ties are my new favorite accessory.”
It’s a trendy middle finger to traditional women’s wear.
The necktie trend first debuted with 1977’s Annie Hall. Years later, it struck a chord with millennials during their early years, courtesy of rebellious rockers like Avril Lavigne. The then-teenage “Sk8er Boi” singer, now 40, made loose ties a wardrobe staple, inspiring Y2K misfits to follow suit.
Now, thanks to twenty-somethings on TikTok, young people obsessed with once-in-a-lifetime outfits like skinny jeans and the edgy “over the shirt” look, high clotheshorses are reviving the tie style — and adding their own polished curves .
Smoke shows like supermodel Bella Hadid and CDFA fashion icon Zendaya are at the forefront of the revival.
Hadid, 28, got tongues wagging as she stole the show in a suit and tie for Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2025 runway show during Paris Fashion Week in September.
Zendaya, 28, had an equally eye-catching effect in July when she wore a blue and white striped knit tie to the Wimbledon Championships. The Challenger star previously stole the show in a leather tie at the 2022 Oscars party, serving up an androgynous aesthetic with her neck piece de resistance.
But luxury trim isn’t all the rage among under-30 trends.
Victoria Beckham, 50, recently turned heads in a custom couture matching tie. Comedian Hannah Berner, 33, also incorporated ties into her look while starring in must-see shows like The Daily Show and After Midnight.
Selma Blair, 52, also fails with the dapper accessory.
The ‘Legally Blonde’ bombshell wore an oversized brown suit, chunky brown leather belt, white button-down shirt and hair braid tie at the Schiparelli Haute Couture show in June. The designer label debuted a line of handmade ties during its recent Fall 2025 runway presentation.
And virtual fashionistas are making sure that the neckband – whether it’s made of cotton, cowhide or human hair curls – remains the “It” product for the new year.
“Unwrapping and styling my new Prada tie,” Gotham mouthpiece Elie Jos gloated in a viral video, featuring visuals of herself in a Hadid-esque ensemble.
AJ, a style influencer from NYC, separately confessed, “I think I have a little tie obsession,” in a post showing off her DIY top made entirely of ties, which she accessorized with — you with mind – a tie.
“I want the top tie,” cheered the commentators. “It’s okay.”
